Understanding soil characteristics is important for determining alternative mining land management strategies, especially those related to soil and air conservation schemes. This book reviews the soil characteristics of mining areas in the tropics and further examines the relationship between rainfall intensity and soil degradation. One of the causes of soil degradation is the process of erosion. Erosion reduces the soil’s ability to absorb and store water and causes the loss of nutrient-rich soil layers that are essential for plant growth. Integrated land management is needed to reduce the impact of coal mining on soil damage. Only when there is complete knowledge of the land features around the coal mining concession can this strategy be developed.
