Numerous books, journals, and studies demonstrate that the area of sociolinguistics has undergone significant development. Sociolinguistics is the study of the various ways that different groups of people use language. This book on language in social contexts serves as an introduction to the discipline of sociolinguistics for undergraduate students. There are six chapters in this book. The first chapter of the book illustrates the relationship between language and society. The chapters which follow are Language Variation, Language and Culture, Language and Politeness, Language, Sex and Gender, and lastly Switching, Code Mixing, Lexical Borrowing, and Interference. We use various materials from recent publications to provide examples. In addition, we use several examples from movies, mass media, social media, and field observation. This book includes examples in a variety of languages, but readers will find a significant number of examples in Balinese.
