Language is more than just a skill: it is a window to a bigger international world. We should be aware of the inevitability of globalization and how important it is for people to master English communication skills, to be able to engage effectively in international trade. During my many years of teaching the English language, I found it interesting that most of my students were extremely keen on studying a higher level of English and discussing a wider range of issues than their language proficiency would allow. Judging from a psychological development point of view, this is very encouraging. Over the long term, however, it will eventually be discouraging, as they frequently encounter problems in using basic vocabulary related to the topics being discussed. To the best of my knowledge, English textbooks which deal with local issues such as flooding, forest fires or labor disputes are rarely found on bookshelves. It is ironic when upper intermediate and advanced-level students are proficient at discussion of global issues but perform poorly when discussing local ones. They find themselves speechless and quickly switch to Bahasa Indonesia. Then they eventually tried to change the topic, feeling bored and quit.
