In the 1955 General Election, Islamic parties managed to get 42 percent of the votes, but only 14 percent in the 1999 election. Even including PAN and PKB voters, the total only reaches 34 percent. Aside from the financial and internal conflicts, the incapability in formulating attractive programs is deemed the main reason behind this drastic drop in numbers.
